A
model horse researcher's guide to the Internet
In order to really become a top contender in the Model Horse industry, you need to know how to uncover resources to both help your business and also increase your knowledge about model horses. I've found the following to be most useful. The Wayback MachineThe Wayback Machine is rather awesome! It has indexed and archived copies of Internet sites (millions and millions of them) for over 7 years. For example, ever realize that eBay first looked like this? Or that Yahoo first looked like that? Probably not! And here's a great way you can use the Wayback Machine for your own research. Let's say that you wanted to research articles on customizing your model horse. You could search for customizing model horses articles and perhaps uncover A Stableful of Links. Scroll down the page, and you'll see their Customization links. That page has a direct link to Helpful Hints. Visit the Helpful Hints page now - you'll see a link for "Molding and Casting Your Own Resin Models"! Hey! Now that certainly sounds useful! But alas...click on it, and the page is no longer there. Wah! But not to fear! Return to the Helpful Hints page, rightclick over that link, and view its properties. You'll see the link is http://www.mindspring.com/~dedeale/molding.html . That's the one that no longer exists. Copy that link to your computer's memory (highlight it and press <CONTROL> C). Then visit the Wayback Machine at http://www.archive.org , and paste that link into the search field.(click once in the search field and then press <CONTROL> V). Voila! You can see the original page as it appeared in Feb 1999. Want to see that again? Whenever you uncover a PAGE NOT FOUND error, do: 1.) Right-click over the missing link to see what it was. 2.) Copy that link to your computer's memory 3.) Go to the Wayback Machine at http://www.archive.org 4.) Paste that link into the search feature 5.) Search and enjoy! How else can you research online? Google ResearchingGo to Google and search for your parameters! Just tack on the words: origins rules hobby lsq forums mailing list like so: See how easy it is? Did you know that before there was the World Wide Web, there was Usenet (or Netnews)? Now also known as "google groups", this resources includes thousands of special interest newsgroups in which just about anything is discussed. One of the relevant ones for this discussion is rec.equestrian - many model horse questions get posted there. You can go to Google Groups and search for and you'll see discussions that go back over a decade. There's an advanced search feature as well! You can visit there and specify your search to include the phrase "special run" like so: Lots of fun things you can do! :-) You're only limited by your imagination. Internet ResearchingEver want to know how the pros research online? There are several superb guides to the Internet and knowledge acquisition including: Improving Auction SalesThere are lots of great resources online to help you improve your auctions!
